Why Do We Crave What Is Bad For Us?

The old cliché that if something is delicious then it is probably fattening is often actually true. Take any list of favorite foods or drinks, and there is almost no question that the majority will be those that are unhealthy for us. We instinctively crave foods (or drinks) that typically are not the best choice for us – they are unhealthy, lack nutrition, and often they don’t really satisfy us very well – but we keep going back, for whatever reason. Why do we crave so much what is bad for us?
There is no denying that there is a certain appeal to food that is not particularly healthy. This allure is not necessarily always about the way the food tastes, sometimes it's simply for the convenience.
Say you happen to be at a football game, the odds are that the choices for a snack do not include a healthy salad, but will include burgers, hot dogs, and various other foods that won’t do your waistline much good. Sometimes it can be something as basic as the aroma of the food – find someone who doesn’t enjoy the smell of fried onions rings and you may just have found alien life form from another planet in the solar system or galaxy.

More often than not, we simply crave the unhealthy food because why? Because it is familiar! We’re accustomed to it, we don’t need to actually sit down for a proper meal to eat it. And neither do we need to pair it with just the right side dish or appetizer. It’s simple, it's easy, and it tastes good. However, what we really need to do is to find a healthy option that is just as hassle-free. For many people, the best option in this case is often a sandwich – so long as there is not too much butter, mayonnaise, or cheese on it!
